Brows, are they really necessary? Product review
So, I know you have all heard the saying, "The eyes are the windows to the soul." Well if that's the case, your brows are definitely the window frames. They give structure and draw attention to those beautiful eyes of yours. Now, does that make them a must have? In my opinion, I have to say yes. Even if you aren't going to do foundation, concealer, or even eye shadow, just lightly penciling in your brows and a touch of mascara can make you look more awake and even younger. Who doesn't want to look younger.
With that, I bring you a couple products I recently received for free from Maybelline to give my unbiased review. I have the BROWdrama Shaping Chalk powder and BROWprecise Micro Pencil. The chalk retails for $9.99 and the pencil for $6.99. Not exactly breaking the bank for these products should you choose to purchase them. Now, I have used my share of brow products in the past, mostly more on the high end side of the spectrum, so I truly didn't know what to expect from these products.
Last day of pride month I realized I still hadn't gotten off my butt to do a rainbow masterpiece and I figured, what better time to try out these new products. While I LOVED the eyeshadow look I created I was less than impressed with how my brows turned out. These products come with a bit of a learning curve. I just about distroyed my whole look due to fallout from the damned brow chalk applicator. It is thick and super clumsy to use. Now the pencil gave me a very nice and crisp line as well as being blendable enough to make a lightly ombré brow (which I prefer. The solid, blocky brow look is so not a good look on me or anyone else in my opinion). It also acts as a nice wax base to keep your brow hairs in place and something for the chalk to cling to. That being said, you do not get much product!
Look at this you guys! I was in no way heavy handed with this. You can ask just about anyone I have worked with and they will tell you I have a pretty light touch. I don't care if a product is only $7, if I can only use it a max of 7 times, it is not worth it! I have paid upwards of $20 on a brow pencil in the past and it has lasted me a full year. Yes, I am going to be super cliche, but you get what you pay for.
Now, back to that first little gem that nearly had me tossing it across the room with the ridiculous amount of fall out. The chalk powder, I have to say, will probably be re purchased once I run out. The trick? Use a fine angled brow brush! Seriously, you will thank me later. The amount of product you use is so minuscule and the tiny bit you use goes so far, it makes it worth every penny of the $10. Only with a separate brush though. You try using the applicator and product falls everywhere. Even if you manage to make it to your brows without covering your face in little brown dots (that streak like no body's business), the applicator is so thick there is no way in hell you are keeping the crisp lines you just spent all your time on matching to the other side (and we all know you take way too much time trying to make those girls twins, not sisters).
Like I said, they definitely take a bit of practice to use. As you can see in the picture below, my brows are much more defined and clean than in the rainbow look. If you get any of these products I would recommend the BROWdrama Chalk Power because it's the most bang for your buck and it doesn't have to be used over any wax base. It works perfectly fine on its own. The pencil, however, is a joke in my book. While it applied like a dream what's the point of something that won't even last me a month when I can pay just a bit more and have a product last me a whole year. It's worth it to invest in better products that give that same dreamy application AND that last.
I plan on making a follow up post with all the do's and do not's to shaping and filling in your brows, so stay tuned. Please let me know in the comments below if you have any other products you would like me to review or if you have any other beauty topics you would like me to cover. Have an amazing day and I will talk to you all again soon.
